SY486 Muirnaeg, Zulu Herring drifter, Stornoway, Lewis.

Model of a Zulu Herring drifter fishing boat SY486 Muirneag ("Darling Girl" in Gaelic & also the name of a prominent hill near Stornoway), based in Stornoway, Lewis. Made from Mussel shell, wood, brass and copper wire. Displayed within a glass display case.

Built by McIntosh of Portessie & Ianstown in 1900 for Alexander "Sandy" MacLeod, Stornoway.

Zulu's were a common sight along the coast of Scotland. They were a sturdy design and fast, with a large hold for the catch. Many were later converted to motor power.
